mixed messages

I took this photo on the platform at Melbourne Central station this evening.

As a side thought: remember when taking photos at underground train stations would get you arrested? That thought ran through my head when I heard the security camera turn to face me. I laughed. Then I shat myself. The things I do for the soulclap.

Back to the sign.

Please tell me, what does this mean?

Escalators are for Customer Only
How else do you get to use the escalators without being a customer? Your sole reason to be on an escalator is to get to a platform and board a train. Surely that makes you a customer. So everyone using the escalator is a customer in my book. Maybe Connex means that YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GET ON A TRAIN to be a customer and use the escalators? What if you change your mind once you get down to the platform? What if your friend calls and she's waiting under the Melbourne Central clock instead of those at Flinders Street? How do you get back to ground level without using the escalators? And since you have already used one, are you now at risk of being fined for using it to get down to the platform to begin with? All because you are now no longer a customer. I DON'T GET IT!

And this?

By this, what I actually mean is THIS...

Diagrams are generally supposed to make things clearer to you, right? Apparently not. What is that trying to say? Use the escalator. No, don't use it. Huh?

Wait, I get it. The person on the left is a customer. The one on the right is not. This is so much clearer now. But Connex, HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE TWO?

Sure, you've fixed the train timetable for the day. Good work, by the way. I left and arrived on time twice today.
Now fix the signage on your platforms, please. Us complex diagram-illiterates do not understand what the hell you are talking about.
