again with the covers, the book i read looked like the one above, but it looks like this is the cover they released in america:
i just think the font in the first cover looks so much better! but that's neither here nor there, because i'd heard so much hype about this book/author that i'd have read it even if the cover had the boring font.
sloane crosley is supposed to be like a female david sedaris, who writes essays about episodes in her life in an amusing way.
so, is she?
no.
david sedaris is way funnier and his stories have more of a point to them i think, or at least more of a hilarious climax. i didn't really laugh out loud with this collection of stories the way i have with sedaris' stuff. overall, i probably would've liked this book more if i hadn't heard the david sedaris comparison (but then i probably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place), or if i hadn't read his books before.
that said, the stories are pretty good. a few of the stories i liked best included the one talking about how she used to love some early-90s game called oregon trail, the one where she tries repeatedly to have a one-night stand, and the one where she has an awkward dinner party at her apartment and finds afterwards that someone has left a poop on her carpet, and tries to figure out who did it.
i googled sloane crosley today and found a youtube video of her reading an essay from the book. its always weird when you hear authors speak after reading their books, she doesn't sound at all like i imagined when reading the book.
anyway, 7/10.
