soulclap bookclub: sunshine

though i am wary of resurrecting the idea of a bookclub (in case this becomes a point of obsession for some people), i figure i will try to semi-regularly post about any books i have read that don't suck.
or books that do suck, and i want to rant viciously about how bad it sucked so that no-one else will make the same mistake of reading that book.

so today's book is sunshine, by robin mckinley.

i know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but really? who doesn't? i am one of the most judgemental book coverists of all. i can totally imagine constructing a website devoted to book covers.
so let me tell you if the book had either of these two equally awful covers:

there is no way i would have even touched the book to read the blurb. yuck, overly dramatic blegh blegh, makes me think of satanists. however, the book i picked up had this cover:

some people call it dull, but i think its a huge improvement. also, it had a recommendation by neil gaiman on the front and that pretty much sold me.

anyway, this book is about vampires. yes, its kind of like twilight, but it was written before that and the main character isn't quite as much of a twat.

basically, the story is about a boring girl who works in a bakery and gets kidnapped by a bunch of vampires to be served up to be eated by another vampire. and finds out that she's not as boring as she thought she was.

overall, i quite liked it. some of it doesn't make so much sense, and theres a lot of pointless rambling on and made-up sci-fi jargon, but after reading the train wreck that is twilight, it reads like a masterpiece. and all the talk of bakeries and baking makes me hungry.

5 out of 10: better than twilight, good enough to pass the time on the train.
